There aren’t. There are not enough words to express the emotions and gratitude I have for the STARS program born and raised in Stockton, California I’d never lived outside of the state before. After losing my father, brother, and son in less than a two-year period, I found it very difficult to cope. With little to no help. I decided to try something different, so I moved to Las Vegas. Soon after arriving, I had to face the fact that I was basically alone in a strange place with limited resources. This move was starting to feel and look like a mistake. Things became more difficult when, two years into my stay, I found myself in a very unhealthy relationship. Living in depression and feeling hopeless. I started attending a behavior health program in the hopes that things would turn around. Even in the program, I was still extremely depressed, and on top of that, I was now homeless.  I truly wanted to give up then, but Ms. Hayes wouldn’t let me; she went above and beyond her job to make sure my needs were being met. She never gave up on me, even when I did. She had me write my goals down and establish a plan to execute them. If one way didn’t work, we kept trying until we found a solution that fit. She even took me to her job every day, which enabled me to volunteer, which helped me build. Many skills, such as communication skills. Self-awareness, confidence, self-esteem, and life skills. It felt good to be capable, use my strengths, and improve on my weaknesses, and this was all done at no cost to me. I have seen Ms. Hayes make changes in many lives for free, and I know with added support she could do so much more.
